NO CAUSE FOR ALARM: MBEKI ON TUTU'S CONDITION

Former President Thabo Mbeki says South Africans should not be too worried about the condition of Archbishop Emeritus, Desmond Tutu.

Tutu was re-admitted to an undisclosed Cape Town hospital on Monday for inflammation. The Archbishop will spend the next two weeks in hospital.

Speaking to the SABC, Mbeki says he spoke to Tutu who assured him that there is no reason to panic.

“He is grown up and has particular problems, but nothing really to worry about. I listened this morning to the daughter - Mpho, taking about it and indeed she communicated the same message. The Archbishop did explain to me what the problem was and I agree with him it’s not serious. I agree with him he should get out of hospital as soon as he can," says Mbeki.

The Archbishop’s daughter, Reverend Mpho Tutu said he has been placed on a new course of intensive antibiotic treatment. She says her father remains in good spirits and not in any pain.

In a statement Archbishop Thabo Makgoba of Cape Town and his wife, Lungi, said they visited Tutu on Wednesday. Makgoba expressed that while we are worried about Tutu and anxious that the doctors cure him quickly, he is in good spirits.

“He was laughing so much that he cried. I am sure the country joins me in wishing him and Ma Leah well,” added Makgoba.

This is the third time in recent months that the 83-year-old cleric has been receiving medical treatment in hospital.
